We have one earth. It is our responsibility to take care of it. Reducing our carbon footprints, planting trees, and using eco-friendly and sustainable products are some of the ways in which we can help the environment.

The Indian wedding industry is estimated to be a $50 billion market. Thus, the impact the wedding industry has on the environment cannot be ignored. Making the wedding industry sustainable and eco-friendly is extremely important for the environment.

Here are a few eco-friendly wedding décor ideas to make your wedding more sustainable:

Using eco-friendly materials like jute, cotton, wool, etc to create elaborate setups

Wedding designers are extremely creative when it comes to using materials. Keep your brief to your designers as eco-friendly and watch them create magic. At Meghaa Modi Design Studio we have created sustainable installations using materials like jute, cotton, and wool.

Use naturally dried flowers or silk flowers:

If using fresh flowers is expensive, try using faux silk flowers or dried flowers and leaves. These are eco-friendly flowers and look stunning in decor. This is one sure-shot way of having an eco-friendly wedding décor. Avoid using plastic flowers as much as possible.

Use locally grown flowers:

Fresh flowers are your first love and if you can’t imagine your wedding without them, then opt for locally sourced flowers from farmers near you. This will significantly reduce your carbon footprint by avoiding transportation and also provide employment to local farms and farmers. Locally sourced flowers will be the freshest flowers you can get your hands on and will last longer.

Use sola wood flowers:

Another brilliant alternative to fresh and plastic flowers is sola wood flowers. These flowers are made from the renewable wood of marshy plants. These are eco-flowers and last a lifetime. These eco flowers look very similar to real flowers and are an amazing option for an eco-friendly wedding décor.

Use wood or metal structures:

When deciding on an eco-friendly wedding décor, using structures made out of wood or metals is a very good idea to keep the impact on the environment minimal. These structures can be reused in multiple types and when combined with other factors like lights and drapes it can look magical.

Using paper and fabric flowers:

Paper and fabric flowers are a great way to have an eco-friendly wedding décor. These flowers are reusable and can also be recycled. These eco flowers make for beautiful backdrops and setups in weddings and cause minimum harm to the environment.

Flowers are and will always be an important part of every wedding. What we can do is use the well and understand the impact we create with our actions. By opting for eco-friendly flowers we reduce the amount of non-recyclable waste that lands in landfills. Another great idea that we can apply in our everyday lives is to collect all the waste fresh flowers and use it to make eco-friendly colours or send this across to NGO’s or companies that are using these flowers to create incense sticks, colours, perfumes, etc. Weddings in general generate a lot of flower waste and this could be one way in which it can minimise its impact on the environment.

We would love to hear your opinion regarding eco-friendly flowers and how we can make this industry more sustainable?
